RTE Bonus: The Grammy Awards Live Blog

8pm

Why is Taylor Swift co-opting Brit Brit's Circus tour costumes?  Also, that bunny is creepy.  She sounds better than she usually does live though, so there's that.  And, are those clowns with clown hand puppets?  Yes, Tay-Tay, we know.  You're a big deal.

(On a side note, I love her song 'Trouble' so much.  But, narratively, wouldn't it have made sense to release 'Trouble' before 'Never Ever...'?)

Oh LL Cool J.  I'm liking the hometown shout outs.  Plus, the signature Kangol hat.

The lights hanging in the theater look like the lights that Mumford & Sons used during their summer tour.

My favorite thing so far?  Panning to all the unimpressed celeb faces in the crowd.

Grammys for Grammy!  Aww, LL, that's adorable.

Oh Adele, I love you so much.  You may need a new stylist.

ELTON JOHN AND ED SHEERAN!!

I read about how Elton John told the Grammy people that they had to have Ed Sheeran perform because Ed is just so amazing.  The Grammy people said that Ed could perform only if Elton performed with him.  Elton said he would because he believed in Ed that much.  Or something.

Let's agree that Ed Sheeran is just about the cutest thing ever, right?

Also worth noting: Elton John wears his sunglasses at night so he can so he can...

Aww....that was so good!  And what an honor to have Sir Elton believe in you that much!

(Who was the douche in silk pajamas talking about the family jewels?)

8:18pm

Oh dear.  There are children on twitter who don't know who Elton John is?

J-Lo is so pretty, though I really don't understand the whole topknot thing.

Best Pop Solo Performance - I'm pulling for Carly Rae, I think.  In terms of a pure pop song, it was everywhere this year.

Oh, Adele.  Holy crap.  She's still pulling Grammys from that album and I feel like it came out like four years ago!  I'm so torn about her dress.  Love the cut of the skirt, think the neck should be lower, not feeling the print.

NPH!! NPH!! NPH!!

NPH introducing fun.!!! That's a whole lot of awesome.

I PINK PUFFY HEART fun. SO MUCH!!!!

I've said it before, but I would listen to Nate Reuss sing an organic chemistry textbook or a microwave instruction manual.  I just.  Though, sweetie, what's up with the man capris?

"If you're lost and alone or you're sinking like a stone; carry on."  We could all use a little of that sometime, right?

Oh, the rain is a weird touch?  I guess that the balloons at the top are supposed to look like clouds?

I'm pretty sure that was Janelle Monae giving them a standing O - that's super cute!

8:31

John Mayer, you're looking pretty dapper in your blue velvet jacket!   It's so good to see you out and about and not looking like a homeless man in a poncho.  Your bow tie is a little crooked though.   I also love how he's always so reverent towards industry legends like Ms. Raitt.

Miranda's hair & make up looks so pretty!  I'm not sure if I love the dress.  It sounds like her mic isn't up as high as it needs to be; it's hard to hear her.

Oh Dierks Bentley, you are the cutest country cutie pie.  I remember seeing you when you were just starting out and you are just as adorable now!

This song is such a heart-breaker!  I wish the vocals were higher.

I should start listening to more country music again.

I feel like every time Dick Clark gets mentioned, there should be a cut to Ryan Seacrest weeping in a corner.

I can't hear the name Miguel and not think of Kiss98.5's Kevin & Miguel.  I'm digging the shiny, striped jacket though!  He had a very nice voice but I didn't think that was super exciting.

Best Country Solo Performance - Oh man, I like Dierks, Hunter Hayes and Blake Shelton for this category.

Carrie Underwood wins.  Well, she is still the it girl, I suppose.  She does seem very nice and is always so grateful for the acclaim she receives.  I also like the shot of Randy Jackson in the audience looking like a proud uncle.

8:49

Song of the Year - I'm pulling for fun. on this.  That song was such an anthem for me this year.

YES YES YES!!!!

I'm glad Nate took off his man capris to win an award.  I always love an age joke.  I also love that Taylro Swift is apparently a fun. fan (and is dangerously close to flashing some side boob).  Lena is doing the "supportive girlfriend" well.  I don't understand the Jay-Z shout out, but like that he's got a glass of something.

Oh man, Mumford & Sons.  This song ate my brain this summer.  Like, crawled into my head and just started pushing it's way out.  I love it so much.

And here it comes....BOOM!

I love that my downstairs neighbor is watching the Grammys so loudly the that the Mumford bassline is pounding in my floor boards.  Good on Taylor for singing along with M&S too!  She's having a good night as a fan, apparently.

9:03

I like that Ellen is walking in to Jay-Z.  Oh, it's because she's with Beyonce.  This is an awkward introduction?  Which is odd because they're both usually so charming.

I like B's red lip.

JUSTIN JUSTIN JUSTIN JUSTIN!!!!

Oooh, he's getting the vintage black & white treatment that Bruno Mars got last year.  I like that one of his "pips" is a girl.

I like this song a lot but I can't tell if I like it because it's Justin or because it's good.  This tie choreography is pretty intense.

Did he just say "seat hole"?  Also, I love that Jay-Z just emerges from the audience.  No big deal, whatever.

And now we're getting orchestral?

His falsetto is still pretty magical.  Also, I love that the bandstands say "and his Tennessee Kids".

Damn, Kelly Rowland looks amazing.  That is a hot dress and those big emerald rings are gorgeous.

Best Urban Contemporary - WHY THE FUCK IS CHRIS BROWN STILL BEING NOMINATED FOR THINGS?  Frank Ocean's got this, right?

Oh thank goodness.  He's had such a great story this year and what a gracious acceptance speech.

I'm unsure about Justin's Target commercial, however.  But, the boy in the Bud Light commercial featuring Justin's song was super cute!

9:18

Who did Dave Grohl have to pay off to get such an extended plug for his movie?

Rock Performance - I've got to go with Mumford on this.  That song is just. so. good. But, I'd be perfectly fine with the Black Keys or the Alabama Shakes.

Black Keys!  Yay!  I like them.  Plus, did you know that Patrick Carney produced the Sheepdogs' most recent album (and there's my Sheepdogs plug for the night).

Let's talk about how hot Adam Levine is.  Ready?  Go.  You can hold me so close.  I promise that I am totally okay with that.  I was always ambivalent about Maroon 5, but Overexposed was one of my favorite albums of last year.  That was a really good performance.

Alicia Keys is playing the drums.  Also, she has some intense underboob.  Is that how all these ladies got around the dress code?  With the sheer panels?

Oh man, those two sound good together.  That's a lot of hotness on one stage.

Best Pop Vocal Album - Damn.  Those are five solid albums, but I'd say fun., Florence, or Maroon 5.

Oh, Kelly won!  I like her.  I never noticed how awesome her bangs looked in the Stronger video.  Oh Kelly, you are adorable.  And also kind of a hot mess.  That was cute and heartfelt.  Plus, getting stuck in Miranda Lambert's sequins was pretty hilarious.

9:35

LL, I know you're trying to push the social interaction so that someone in CBS' analytics department can talk about how socially engaged we all were tonight, but your constant "hash tag" talk is getting annoying.

Alright Ri-Ri, what do you have for us?

This is pretty?  It's not doing a whole lot for me.

And then they show Chris Brown.  Classy, Grammys, classy.

I like Carly's dress.  That is a really sparkly presenting duo.

Best Collaboration -  I like Rihanna & Jay-Z for this.  But I am not the expert here.

I like that Frank Ocean called Kanye "Mr. West" and I like that Jay-Z was all class and let them have their moment and then was hilarious.  Good work all the way around.

Okay, this is bugging me - why is EVERYONE wearing black?  Aren't the Grammys usually a little more fun?  Other than Miranda's sparkly nude and Adele's... whatever that is... everyone's been in black.  Is our national outlook really that bleak?

9:49

Oh, and here's Kat Denning in blue.  I feel better.

Yay Black Keys!!

I've seen the Preservation Jazz Band in New Orleans.  Like, I recognize that bass drum.

Just me or the timing was a little off on that intro?

That is a pretty intense headdress, organ dude.

I kind of forgot that Katy Perry and John Mayer were dating.  That seems like a time bomb waiting to go off, right?

In theory, this performance should be amazing, but it sounds like they didn't all get quite into the pocket.

It's easy to be dismissive about it, but Kelly Clarkson has been on the national radar for more than ten  years, and has had so many hits.  Listening to her sing here, stripped down and raw with emotion, it's easy to see why.  Her voice goes on for miles and miles.

That was stunning.

HOLY CRAP.  KELLY CLARKSON JUST SAID SUPER PUMPED.

Best Country Album - I don't really have a horse in this race.

I dig the Zac Brown Band though, so that's good.  I'm not sure about his hat though.

10:05

A Bob Marley tribute?  Smoke 'em if you've got 'em!

I love Bruno Mars.  That hat seems too big for his head.  Also, how is this a Bob Marley tribute?

Fun fact: I did a WERQ dance fitness routine to this song today, from memory, in Tifft Nature Preserve, on snow shoes.  It was much harder to do in snow shoes than in sneakers at the gym.

I love this.  I love the whole throwback thing -  I love his voice; I love the dancing horns.

Oh...here comes Sting.  I don't know how I feel about Sting's contribution here.

Love that NPH, Adele and Keith Urban are singing along.

Alright Sting, bring it.  This seems much more clearly Marley influenced.

Sting does not look bad for a 61 year old man.  But, at what point do you need to be cut off from your leather pants?

Why do they keep cutting to Chris Brown when Rihanna sings?  It just makes me so mad.  Like, we get it.  Knock it off.

Love that Ellen has decided this is just an everyday dance party.

Rihanna's weave looks amazing.

Okay, this just got AWESOME.  This is a kick ass version of 'Could You Be Loved'.  I love it.

10:17

YAY THE LUMINEERS!!!  I love that they have blown up so spectacularly.  Man, his voice is something else.  I listened to their album compulsively all fall.  AND, who's got two thumbs and tickets to see the Lumineers in Berkeley?  THIS GIRL!!

Aww!  Hunter Hayes standing up and rocking out.  And, I kind of love that Taylor Swift is actually a teenage girl and just keeps singing along.

I know this makes me terribly uncool, but I just don't get Jack White.  Like, I know he's done so much groundbreaking and the White Stripes and everybody loves him.  But...I just haven't put the time in to understand why it's so amazing.  I like his girl power band though.

Well hello Katy Perry's boobs.  I like the understated make up and the self-deprecation.  Not so much the bagging on Bon Iver.

Best New Artist - Again, this is such a great group of nominees and I feel like it could literally go anyway.  I think Alabama Shakes and Lumineers cancel each other out though?  I'm definitely pulling for fun.

YAY!!! YAY!!! YAY!!!

Nate Reuss, keeping it real.

10:34

I think Hunter Hayes is adorable.  He seems like a very nice young man and his song 'Wanted' is adorable.  I also like that he called Carrie Underwood his "beautiful mentor".

Whoa, we've got Cinderella Carrie here, huh?  That is an enormous dress.  Whoa, and now the dress has projections on it.  Which is, I guess, why it's so enormous.

Carrie Underwood is another one with a voice that just doesn't quit, huh?  American Idol has to be feeling pretty smug with itself after tonight.  They don't often get it right but when they do, they spawn some of the most powerful artists ever.

Has anyone ever done this whole movie on a dress thing before?  Also, how hard must it be to stand perfectly still?

That was very, very pretty - both audio and visual.

Oh man, look at all these people lose their shit for Prince.

Record of the Year - I'm going Black Keys on this one.  But, Gotye is a very strong possibility.

Oh, yay for Gotye.  His album 'Making Mirrors' is brilliant and it's hilarious because nothing on the album sounds like that song.  And of course he freaks out and thanks Prince.  Because... it's Prince.  Also, what is Kimbra wearing?  Just tulle and body glitter?

10:47

That is a super cool jazz combo.  I love Take 5.  Brubek is a legend.

Umm, Ryan Seacrest?  Don't you already work 22 hours a day now?  How do you have time for another job?

Justin's bow tie seems a little big?

Oh, yay!  Let's appreciate music teachers!  At some point, I will have to write about all the music teachers I've had and how they shaped how I interact with music.  That's nice.  Go Grammys!  Save arts education!

And...that's kind of an awkward segue into the memorial portion, no?

Oh, Elton, that was a little awkward.

Zac Brown looks much more at home in this hat.

This is a badass line up for the Levon Helm tribute.  Elton John, Zac Brown, Maracus Mumford, the rest of Mumford & Sons...

This is fun and impressive and makes me think about my high school ex-boyfriend who always played this song at open mic nights.  I rather enjoyed that!

11:09

I totally missed it - who is this guy?  And why is he singing Elton John when Elton John is there?  And he mentioned another language but is singing in English?  I'm very confused.

Oh, here comes the bilingual portion.

Yeah Frank Ocean!  That is pretty cool - the organ with the running legs screen.  I'm not quite sure why this is a song about Forest Gump, but I'm going to stay with him and see where it goes.

That is some damned impressive whistling.

The visuals on that performance were maybe better than the audio.  I did not 100% understand it.  It was definitely cool though!

Album of the Year - Some Nights or Babel, for sure.  If only because those two albums pretty much gave me my soundtrack.

Nice!  Yay Mumford and Sons!  Again, how fricking awesome is it that these guys are rock nominated when they predominantly feature a banjo and an accordion?  That's just incredible.

Oh, I always forget they're British.  I also love that they're going to suck up to Adele.  That was a pretty adorkable acceptance speech.  Well-deserved.  They created a genre with Sigh No More and Babel was just incredible.

11:23

LL Cool J - during the day I do hosting and acting but at night I rap.  That's kind of hilarious.  I can appreciate the talent and history on this stage.  And, frankly, LL Cool J's 'Unplugged' is one of the best hours of television ever, I just... this isn't my everyday thing.

Nope, changed my mind, this is lots of fun.  Enjoyed the Beastie Boys tribute.

And, the end of this performance just got pre-empted by Hilton and Delta commercials?  At 11:28?  That seems kind of lame.

And, that's the night folks!  Thanks for hanging out with me!  All in all, a good show, for sure!

RTE Bonus: 2016 American Music Awards Significantly Delayed Blog

Usual disclaimers about how this is much less fun from the west coast and on DVR. I know I say this every time but I love Bruno Mars.  I like that he's traveling with a band of hpye men, though I miss his horn section.  Whoa - how did I miss that Bruno is the heir apparent to MJ?  This dance break is outstanding.  Is the use of pop and locking in reference to "pop, pop it's showtime?" Gigi Hadid is a model, right?  Has she ever had a speaking job before?  I'm not sure this would be the place to start?  I like that she's called out both the electoral college and Melania in the first four minutes.  Though that impression was kind of weak sauce.  Much like the VMAs, I feel like I still know things about music but if the presenters are what the children are into, I am out of touch.  Jay Pharaoh's Donald impression is hilarious though. These three look like they could orchestrate a complicated murder and get away with it, stage a hostile corporate takeov

The Space Between the Tears We Cry is the Laughter Keeps Us Coming Back For More

Who: Dave Matthews Band with Brandi Carlile When: July 3, 2012 Where: Darien Lake Performing Arts Center/ Darien Center, NY With: Zach, James & Chelsea Of Note: Influencing the next generation ... There are so many things I want to say, that I need to say about this show. Brace yourself. Seeing the Dave Matthews Band at Darien Lake is a summer tradition for me and I love all of it. The smell of sunscreen, the great lot for tailgating, the terrible traffic getting out of the venue, the (usually) day of roller coasters that precedes it...I love it all. Sadly, my comrades in Dave at Darien have either moved away or have new responsibilities/different priorities now so I was afraid it might not happen this year. No big deal, I'm seeing two other DMB shows this summer, right? Then, a stroke of genius hit me and I asked my nephew if he'd like me to take him to his very first concert. He agreed, asked if he could bring some friends (which, obviously!) and we w
