Who: John Mayer with Michael Franti
When: February 14, 2010
Where: Air Canada Centre/ Toronto ON
With: Becky
Of Note: the fact that John Mayer was cracked out beyond belief from start to finish
It is my prerogative as a female to love John Mayer. It would also be my prerogative to hate John Mayer if I wanted to. I don't. I love him. On the rockstar>dreamboat continuum, he is probably 70% dreamboat and 30% rockstar (though, most of the rockstar cred comes from his John Mayer Trio work). I find him adorable and almost all of his music makes me want to do one of three things: dance around my living room, make out, or cry. That makes me love him.
I was very excited for both Becky and John to be my Valentines. Though we had pretty crappy seats, we had a pretty awesome time.
The week before this concert was the week that John's interview with Playboy came out...you know, the one where he called Jessica Simpson "sexual napalm"? Because of this, I had a premonition that we were going to be in for a wild ride that night. When John came on stage wearing a plaid jacket and bow tie, my premonition was confirmed. He brought out a bucket of pink carnations and started throwing them into the crowd, telling us that we were all his Valentines.
The set was a good mix of new & old, playing a bunch of tracks from 'Battle Studies' and a bunch from 'Continuum'. At that moment in time, I was obsessed with 'Who Says' (dance around my living room) and was really excited to hear it as the first song of the encore.
I know he played 'Half of My Heart' (cry), 'Perfectly Lonely' (make out) and 'Why Georgia' (make out or dance, depending on the company). More than the music from this show, which was tight and crisp, as all Mayer shows are, I remember that he was out of his fricking mind.
After the first number, he lost the plaid jacket and was down to a button down and vest. He eventually lost the vest, then lost the shirt for the encore. He was really into the fact that we were all Valentines and wanted someone to fall in love at the show. He made a joke about the people with the worst seats on one side meeting the people with the worst seats from the other side. Beck & I were really excited, thinking we probably qualified and might get a seat upgrade? Apparently all things rockstars say on stage don't actually happen because nobody moved.
He was really into his band and talking about how great his band was. I thought that was really cool. His guitarist was the guitarist who originated the solo in McCartney's 'Maybe I'm Amazed', which they did an impromptu version of. I think it speaks highly of Mayer's talents that the originator of one of the most iconic guitar solos in all of popular music would tour with him. John talked and swore and started and stopped and made jokes and was just in general kind of out of his mind. Between the interview, and the break-ups and the being in Canada...it seemed like a perfect storm to just let loose and it was an incredible sight to behold.
