Day 2

Civil Twilight, Bombay Bicycle Club, Dry the River, Big K.R.I.T., Metric, Band of Skulls, The Roots, Gotye, Neil Young

I had seen Civil Twilight the week before in Buffalo; we caught the last couple of songs right as we got to the park. The folks at the water filling tent though I was hilarious because I was dancing around like an idiot while getting my Nalgene filled.

Bombay Bicycle Club was a good early day set; Taryn and I noted that there were way more hipster children there on Saturday than there had been on Friday. Thus we dubbed it Austin City Daycare. Towards the end of the set, Taryn made the comment, "Come on guys; it's almost over - time to play the money maker." The bearded guy in front of us cracked up so hard. Then, Bombay Bicycle Club played their popular 'Shuffle'. It was fun!

Dry the River started out so good and then they started singing about their feelings, which got a little sad. They also looked super rock star but played folk. During Dry the River, we met up with Tristan & co. Peter wanted to "walk towards the sexy beats", which led us to Big K.R.I.T. It was tolerable for a small amount of time, mostly due to Tristan's dead on impression of his friends' dance styles.

Then, it was off to Metric. Things I remember about Metric: Emily's voice is insane... so ethereal, almost other-worldly. The day was so beautiful and the people we so dance-y and it was really very lovely. I danced around like a crazy person. Though they're not my super-favorite; this was a very good set.

For most of the afternoon, we camped out between the Bud Light and Barton Springs stages, so we could see & hear both stages (plus were close to the beer tent) and we caught Band of Skulls, the Roots, and Gotye from that vantage point. The other thing that happened during that afternoon was that it rained. Now, I'm no stranger to outdoor events and I pride myself on being prepared. I had no less than three emergency ponchos in my bag. It started to rain, I pulled one out and put it on, no big deal. It cleared up a couple minutes later and I took the poncho off. Like eleven minutes after that, it started to rain again. I decided it was a lost cause. We danced in the rain. The entire park turned into a mud pit. It was amazing.

The Roots were incredible and I danced around like a crazy person. Their cover of 'Move On Up' was particularly awesome. Gotye, who I had also just seen, was also good - though the set was largely the same as the one I'd seen in Toronto. I scooted towards the center of the crowd to dance around like to 'Eyes Wide Open'. I'm pretty sure the people there thought I was actually crazy. (You will note that I spent a lot of time of time dancing around like a crazy person for most of this day. Blame it on the cloudy sky which meant that I needed less water to stay hydrated, which meant more beer. [Sorry Mom!] Also, the rain and the mud. And, I just like to dance around.) I was also really concerned with losing my shoes, which I kept leaving on the ground with the crowd while I flitted off to... dance around like a crazy person. (I did not lose my shoes.)

I fell in the mud walking towards the big stage for Neil Young. I was covered; it was pretty gross. I did not care.

And then, Neil Young. So, Taryn hates Neil Young with a passion. It is kind of hilarious. Everyone else - Tristan & Co., our other ex-coworker Elisa who we met up with, random people in the park - wanted to see Neil Young because, "He's so old. He's going to die soon. You've got to see him while you have the chance now." I wanted to see Neil Young because the Sheepdogs love Neil Young and I have Sheepdogs issues. (Kidding. Kind of.)

So, Neil Young. The man is a legend, obviously. I can imagine he is really sick of playing 'Cinnamon Girl', a song that is more than 40 years old. But, he did and it was great. And then, 'Down by the River' - that was another one of "those moments" - where the whole crowd, in unison, screamed along, "...there goes my baaaabbbbby!" I danced around like a crazy person and screamed right along. It was a perfect ending to a perfect second day. Plus, I mean, he's going to die soon. So, now I can say that I have seen Neil Young. Plus, that everyone said he was so good really irritated Taryn. So, mission accomplished!

(Sorry for the crap-tastic pictures...)

8pm Why is Taylor Swift co-opting Brit Brit's Circus tour costumes?  Also, that bunny is creepy.  She sounds better than she usually does live though, so there's that.  And, are those clowns with clown hand puppets?  Yes, Tay-Tay, we know.  You're a big deal. (On a side note, I love her song 'Trouble' so much.  But, narratively, wouldn't it have made sense to release 'Trouble' before 'Never Ever...'?) Oh LL Cool J.  I'm liking the hometown shout outs.  Plus, the signature Kangol hat. The lights hanging in the theater look like the lights that Mumford & Sons used during their summer tour. My favorite thing so far?  Panning to all the unimpressed celeb faces in the crowd. Grammys for Grammy!  Aww, LL, that's adorable. Oh Adele, I love you so much.  You may need a new stylist. ELTON JOHN AND ED SHEERAN!! I read about how Elton John told the Grammy people that they had to have Ed Sheeran perform because Ed is just so am

Usual disclaimers about how this is much less fun from the west coast and on DVR. I know I say this every time but I love Bruno Mars.  I like that he's traveling with a band of hpye men, though I miss his horn section.  Whoa - how did I miss that Bruno is the heir apparent to MJ?  This dance break is outstanding.  Is the use of pop and locking in reference to "pop, pop it's showtime?" Gigi Hadid is a model, right?  Has she ever had a speaking job before?  I'm not sure this would be the place to start?  I like that she's called out both the electoral college and Melania in the first four minutes.  Though that impression was kind of weak sauce.  Much like the VMAs, I feel like I still know things about music but if the presenters are what the children are into, I am out of touch.  Jay Pharaoh's Donald impression is hilarious though. These three look like they could orchestrate a complicated murder and get away with it, stage a hostile corporate takeov

The Space Between the Tears We Cry is the Laughter Keeps Us Coming Back For More

Who: Dave Matthews Band with Brandi Carlile When: July 3, 2012 Where: Darien Lake Performing Arts Center/ Darien Center, NY With: Zach, James & Chelsea Of Note: Influencing the next generation ... There are so many things I want to say, that I need to say about this show. Brace yourself. Seeing the Dave Matthews Band at Darien Lake is a summer tradition for me and I love all of it. The smell of sunscreen, the great lot for tailgating, the terrible traffic getting out of the venue, the (usually) day of roller coasters that precedes it...I love it all. Sadly, my comrades in Dave at Darien have either moved away or have new responsibilities/different priorities now so I was afraid it might not happen this year. No big deal, I'm seeing two other DMB shows this summer, right? Then, a stroke of genius hit me and I asked my nephew if he'd like me to take him to his very first concert. He agreed, asked if he could bring some friends (which, obviously!) and we w
