RTE Bonus: The Grammy Awards Live Blog

I feel like this is going to be much less fun than last year's because it is far, far later than most of my readership is watching this.  Damn you, the West Coast.

Alright, so we're starting with Beyonce.  I'm not sure I'm loving the gel damp bob?  She is still obviously gorgeous and I can only hope to move one one thousandth  of that well ever in my whole life.  This seems kind of restrained for her?  Just the fog and the chair?  Oh!  Here's Jay-Z.  And there is his hand firmly planted on her ass.  Are they music's biggest power couple of all time?  I'm blanking on any other possible contenders.  So much money talent in one household, yo.

Awww, I forgot that LL Cool J always hosts this.  Everyone loves LL Cool J.  Aww, a cold weather joke.  Way to go lowest common denominator, dude.  Reference to his own lyrics!  That only took 85ish seconds. And the first Taylor Swift joke of the night.  Excellent.  I feel like LL is not really saying anything, just naming artists who are sitting in the audience.  I had no idea P!nk's name was Alicia Moore.  Oh look, it's half the Beatles!

ANNA KENDRICK!!!!  She's my favorite.  I like that Pharrell is wearing a Mountie hat and track jacket.  Also, whoa, Anna Kendrick's boobs.  Okay, these two are both super charming but this is going on for way too long.  Best new artist?  Man, it has been a huge year for all those nominees.  I love Ed Sheeran best but I think Macklemore might get it?  They've had such an ENORMOUS year.  Oh, yup!  My favorite thing I've seen on the internet about them was somebody saying, "How much more must we Mackle?"  I thought it was hilarious.  I like their suits and that they got music-ed off the stage.

Okay, Lorde.  You are so young and this song was so ubiquitous.  I am very impressed by you.  Though, I'm still sad this didn't come out four years ago so that there could have been a BOSS Jenny Humphrey montage set to it on Gossip Girl.  Alas, what could have been.  I'm not entirely sure who styled you for this, but I don't know if I love it...where are your curls and why are you dressed like a cater waiter from 1994?  I like the remix-y vibe though.  Also, mad props for the fact that you sound a-mah-zing live.  That sometimes trips people up.  Good on you, girl.  I hope you have a baller career.

Awww!  Hunter Hayes is such a cutie.  I buy his whole thing - and, I mean, 'Wanted' is such a fantastic earworm.  I anticipate this song is going to be set over a whole lot of inspirational montages, "it gets better" videos, and high school assemblies.  Good on him for using his platform to spread such a positive message. And, it seems really genuine.  He's adorable and that was lovely.  Yay for Hunter Hayes!

Best Pop Duo or Group Performance, huh?  Well, Pharrell has a 2/5 chance, so odds must favor him?  I mean it's got to be 'Blurred Lines' or 'Get Lucky' right?  Both those songs were HUGE.  I personally would have pulled for P!nk & Nate Ruess because I will always root for Nate Ruess always for everything.  The Daft Punk robots kind of remind me of the weird Kia hamsters in their make-over commercial.  Pharrell is kind of blowing this acceptance speech, huh?  Man, they are not messing around with playing people off, are they?

Oh Steve Coogan.  Hamlet 2 was such a delicious train wreck.  A Jo-bros slam?  That seems dated.  Are those enormous dancing evil trees?  I'm not sure how to feel about that.  This is not my favorite song from her most recent effort.  I get that she's trying to get away from it, but I liked her much better in "Waking Up in Vegas" pop confection mode.  Pole dancing on broom sticks?  An actual large dark horse?  That was a spectacle?  I'm not sure if it was a good spectacle.  I've liked her better doing other things.

Oh, LL, you're reaching for those jokes.  I love 'Does Anybody Know What Time It Is'.  I'm not sure I need Robin Thicke playing hype man for this.  He sounds good singing though!  I think he should let the Chicago guy sing a little more though?  This is so much better than I anticipated.  I know Robin Thicke has gotten beat up this year and everyone is sick of 'Blurred Lines' and sick of debating how gross 'Blurred Lines' is or isn't but I have been a fan of his since 'Lost Without U' and 'When I Get You Alone'.  I like the horns-focused take on this - feels fresh and age appropriate.  I liked that a lot.

Are Keith Urban, Johnny Rzeznik and Bon Jovi morphing into one person?  They all need to step away from the flat irons?  I will say that I adore Keith as an American Idol judge though I haven't paid a ton of attention to his music since 'Days Go By'.  I'm pretty sure I saw a hot minute of Gary Clark, Jr. at Austin City Limits last year.  This is not a song I know but it's pretty and being performed very well.  Ooh!  Dueling guitar solos!  Yay for real musicians!  I also kind of love that Keith Urban just punched him in the arm.  That was also very enjoyable.

Who is this social media chick?  Ick.

John Legend is a national treasure.  This is so very, very pretty.  Though, are the Grammys really the place for a slow jam?  Is the lady in the spotlight his wife?  If so, that's cute.  If not, kind of awkward.  It's also incredible that he's so captivating with no bells & whistles - just him and a piano.  Yay!  That was also excellent.

I do not know who Uncle Charlie is.  My bad?  Best Rock Song!  Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and Black Sabbath?  What year is it?  Why are The Sheepdogs not nominated?  My vote would be Muse here but I have no idea.  Oh, how nice that Dave Grohl dressed up for the occasion and awkwardly couldn't decide whether or not to kiss his wife (?) before going up to the stage.  Also, I love that he just said they put very little time or effort into the track.  Awesome.

Oh, Taylor Swift.  I like the more natural hair color & make-up.  The brassier blonde & red lip were getting old.  This is pretty?  She sounds a lot better live than she usually does.  Maybe because she's sitting down/ not trying to remember choreography, etc.  Why the head-banging at the piano?  That seemed disingenuous.  Verdict: better than expected but could have been a verse and a half shorter and she probably should have taken a year off.  I mean, I feel like Taylor Swift fatigue is a real and pressing disease that we all suffer from at least a little.

I love Bruno Mars unapologetically and am thrilled he's doing the Superbowl.

P!nk!  Oooh, she's doing more aerial stunt-work!  I find it incredible that she can twirl around in the air and do gymnastics while singing.  I've said this before but I find it amazing that the singer that started out with 'Get This Party Started' has gone on to give us some of the most compelling songs about heartbreak in the last decade.  Also, this vocal would be impressive if she were standing still but she's not.  And it looked like she was going to fall and that freaked me out.  Whoa, holy shit, she just picked that guy up.  While singing.  This is insane.  Yay for Nate Ruess!!  I say this every time I say anything about him, but I would listen to him sing a photo-copier manual.  Or the liner notes from an obscure polka LP.  Anything really.  Though, dude, what's up with the porn-stache?  These two sound so good together and this song is so gut-wrenching.

Best Pop Solo Performance?  The YouTube clips are a cute twist!  I'll have to look up these covers!  My vote would be for Sara Bareilles because I want her to win things but I don't think it'll actually be her.  Oh, Lorde.  Awesome, makes sense.  That was an adorable acceptance speech.

Why would they give Ozzy a microphone?  He can't speak?  Ringo is doing some pretty intense dorky dad dancing.  I saw some old Beatles interview clips recently and when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, John replied, "He's not even the best drummer in this band."  Some quick Wikapedia-ing tells me this song is from 1973.  I wonder why it's being trotted out now, other than if you get the Beatles to come you let them do whatever they want to...  I keep expecting something else to happen but it's just this.  Okay.
Jamie Foxx just made a pot joke?  Best Rap/Vocal Collaboration?  Is that what the category is called?  Is he ignoring all the song titles he's supposed to announce in favor of talking about how hot Beyonce is?  Smart money says Jay-Z wins?  Oh, yup, with Timberlake.  Good on him.  "All the typical things."  That was hilarious.  "Blue, Daddy got you a gold sippy cup?"  HA!

Have I mentioned I like LL's velvet jacket?  Because I do.  He's looking sharp.  (Really Jen?  "Looking sharp?"  What are you, your mom?)

Imagine Dragons have had such a huge year this year.  Their set at Lollapalooza was such a giant shitshow of people and technical failure.  Whoa.  This just got intense.  I dig the all white and the many drums.  Oh, we're back to Taylor Swift dancing in the audience.  She did that last year, right?  Queen Latifah looks really into this.  These two haven't actually collaborated before have they?  Because this is awesome and they totally should.  Drastically different styles but matching intensity and presence.  On paper something that didn't really make sense but in execution is pretty awesome.  I did not expect to love that but holy crap, I kind of loved that.

Why is Kacey Musgraves wearing light up cowgirl boots?  I like the nod to rhinestone cowboy that they've made here but it seems a little much?  With all the blinking lights?  Most of my frame of reference for her is that she wrote 'Undermine' for the show 'Nashville' which I adore.  I know she's having a big year.  That was cute.

It seems unfair that Julia Roberts is still that beautiful?  It also seems like her shoes don't fit quite right?  Man, they are really up the Beatles' butt this year, huh?  Is there an anniversary of some sort or something that I'm blanking on?  Why the pictures on Johnny Depp on the projections?  Is this from a movie?  What is this?  Also, the guitar player kind of looks like Ty Burrell in a wig, right?  I feel like this should be an exciting, seminal performance but I'm just so confused.  It also looks like everyone is just nodding politely in the audience?

Remember when Marc Anthony was married to J-Lo?  Looking at him, that seems impossible.  Best Pop Vocal Album?  This is really anyone's.  My vote would be for Bruno Mars, I think.  YAY!!  Bruno Mars!!  I know a kick-ass dance fitness routine for "Locked Out of Heaven", if anyone is interested.  I know I say this every time I talk about Bruno Mars, but I think he's this generation's Frankie Vallie.  Good on him.

(Unpopular opinion, maybe?  I'm kind of glad Timberlake didn't win.  I think that the 20/20 Experience sold & got rave reviews because Justin has so much leftover goodwill from FutureSex/LoveSounds - which was so so so amazing.  I was a bit let down by 20/20.)

What is Jeremy Renner wearing?

My mom took me to see Willy Nelson at some sort of fair or something when I was very young.  Also, my mother's favorite Christmas song is Willie Nelson's 'Pretty Paper'.  The internet tells me that Willie Nelson is 80 years old which seems insane that he is still out here doing his thing and sounding like that.  I bet Blake Shelton is really, really excited to be performing with these guys - that's a bajillion years of royalty on this stage.  Aww, that hair shaggy bit was cute.  What the hell is Steven Tyler doing?  With that hair and mustache?  Oh dear.  They didn't let the Imagine Dragons guys get cleaned up from the paint/chalk powder before sending them back to the audience?  Also, Beyonce & Jay-Z seem to be really enthralled by this performance.  I'm not sure the four should all be trying to sing in unison; this is getting a little rough.  That was pretty incredible in terms of "bringing legends together".

Best Country Album?  I have been a little out of touch with country this year and so don't really know what to predict.  T. Swift did not look pleased, huh?  Oh, wow - this is a big deal for her because she's new this year.  And now I feel like I should go listen to her album.

Is NPH really the "star" of How I Met Your Mother?  I thought it was an ensemble.  No matter, NPH is obviously also a national treasure.  I doubt this is going to be as awesome as Colbert ripping on Daft Punk, but let's see what you've got.  Pharrell is now wearing a different Mountie hat?  Why does he have a collection of Mountie hats?  I love the guitarist's disco suit.  I'm not sure I would have put this together but this is kind of in Stevie's wheel-house, huh?  I'm kind of liking the Daft Punk/ Disco megamix here.  What on earth is Yoko doing?  That was fun!  If about 90 seconds too long.

Kinkyboots was amazing, by the way.  Yay for you Cyndi Lauper!

I bet Sara B. is freaking out about this because Carole King is such a BIG DEAL.  I would highly recommend 'Beautiful', the musical written about her.  It just opened on Broadway and gave me so much more insight on everything she contributed to music (because I am an uneducated neanderthal and didn't realize what a big deal she was).  'Beautiful' and 'Brave' mashed up.  I love it.  This is making me a little teary.  Oh wow.  That was absolutely stunning.  Awww, mutual admiration society!

Song of the Year?  My vote goes to Maclemore, honestly.  The first time I heard 'Same Love', I stopped everything I was doing and sat and listened to it, which pretty much never happens.  I found it absolutely riveting.  Oh, wow, what a night for Lorde!  I like that Beyonce has an enormous glass of wine in the front row.

Man, Jared Leto is everywhere this year.

Metallica as performed by a pianist and some fire?  Is Metallica still relevant?  Like, have they done anything since they got into a snit about Napster?  That was interesting but I am clearly not the target audience.  Moving on.

Steven Tyler is perpetually someone's drunk uncle at a wedding reception.  Record of the Year?  It's gotta be Daft Punk again, right?  Yup.  I mean, this was ubiquitous this year.  I'm a little sad that Imagine Dragons don't have to accept an award while splattered in paint, but maybe that's just me.  Awww, I like that Pharrell is star-struck by Smokey Robinson.

Queen Latifah looks gorgeous!  The performance of 'Same Love' was one of my favorite parts of the VMAs.  I know lots of people on the internet are really angry about Macklemore, just in general but I find him very compelling.  Also, Mary Lambert's voice is velvet.  Also, big ups to the horn section.  What the heck?  Queen Latifah can perform marriage ceremonies?  Is she really ordained?  Did they just marry that many couples at the Grammys?  That's insane?  What is Madonna wearing?  That was intense.  I love that everyone in the audience is crying.

What up Seacrest?!  Awww, that's awesome; music teachers really are a special bunch and influence so very many students.  Look at this group, using their power for good.  Whoa!  He's from Westfield, NY.  Repping the WNY!  That's awesome.

So this piano guy is getting lots of play tonight, huh?  Oh look, dead people!

Miranda Lambert and Billie Joe Armstrong singing the Everly Brothers?  Not something I would have ever conceived of, but definitely interesting?  The thing about the Everly Brothers was their harmonies and they're singing so much of this in unison that it sounds kind of empty compared to how this song is usually heard.

And, whoops, my DVR cut off!  I thought part of the West Coast magic would have been that it would have run in the time allotted.  Also, it's 12:30 and I need to be at the airport at 7 so I'm going to wrap this up.  Apparently Daft Punk won Album of the Year and Nine Inch Nails performed with Queens of the Stone Age.  I'm sure both were riveting!

I'm still freaking out about Carole King & Sara Bareilles though.  If you need me, I'll be imagining those two singing 'So Far Away' mashed up with 'Basket Case'.

What did you think?  Let me know in the comments.  Until next year!

8pm Why is Taylor Swift co-opting Brit Brit's Circus tour costumes?  Also, that bunny is creepy.  She sounds better than she usually does live though, so there's that.  And, are those clowns with clown hand puppets?  Yes, Tay-Tay, we know.  You're a big deal. (On a side note, I love her song 'Trouble' so much.  But, narratively, wouldn't it have made sense to release 'Trouble' before 'Never Ever...'?) Oh LL Cool J.  I'm liking the hometown shout outs.  Plus, the signature Kangol hat. The lights hanging in the theater look like the lights that Mumford & Sons used during their summer tour. My favorite thing so far?  Panning to all the unimpressed celeb faces in the crowd. Grammys for Grammy!  Aww, LL, that's adorable. Oh Adele, I love you so much.  You may need a new stylist. ELTON JOHN AND ED SHEERAN!! I read about how Elton John told the Grammy people that they had to have Ed Sheeran perform because Ed is just so am

Usual disclaimers about how this is much less fun from the west coast and on DVR. I know I say this every time but I love Bruno Mars.  I like that he's traveling with a band of hpye men, though I miss his horn section.  Whoa - how did I miss that Bruno is the heir apparent to MJ?  This dance break is outstanding.  Is the use of pop and locking in reference to "pop, pop it's showtime?" Gigi Hadid is a model, right?  Has she ever had a speaking job before?  I'm not sure this would be the place to start?  I like that she's called out both the electoral college and Melania in the first four minutes.  Though that impression was kind of weak sauce.  Much like the VMAs, I feel like I still know things about music but if the presenters are what the children are into, I am out of touch.  Jay Pharaoh's Donald impression is hilarious though. These three look like they could orchestrate a complicated murder and get away with it, stage a hostile corporate takeov

The Space Between the Tears We Cry is the Laughter Keeps Us Coming Back For More

Who: Dave Matthews Band with Brandi Carlile When: July 3, 2012 Where: Darien Lake Performing Arts Center/ Darien Center, NY With: Zach, James & Chelsea Of Note: Influencing the next generation ... There are so many things I want to say, that I need to say about this show. Brace yourself. Seeing the Dave Matthews Band at Darien Lake is a summer tradition for me and I love all of it. The smell of sunscreen, the great lot for tailgating, the terrible traffic getting out of the venue, the (usually) day of roller coasters that precedes it...I love it all. Sadly, my comrades in Dave at Darien have either moved away or have new responsibilities/different priorities now so I was afraid it might not happen this year. No big deal, I'm seeing two other DMB shows this summer, right? Then, a stroke of genius hit me and I asked my nephew if he'd like me to take him to his very first concert. He agreed, asked if he could bring some friends (which, obviously!) and we w
