RTE Bonus, The Sing Off "Live" Blog, Episode 3

HOLY CRAP THEY'RE STARTING WITH "IN YOUR EYES".  And it's my favorite Filharmonic!  Oooh, this is amazing.  These first three guys sound so good.  I love that Shawn Stockman is singing along. I literally have goosebumps right now.  KEY CHANGE.  I can't even.  That was so, so,so good.  I will be YouTubing that clip a lot.

"Master of the do-re-mis and master of the 88 keys."  I love the camaraderie between Nick and the judges.  Me & you both, lady from Ten.  "I watched them go from boys to men."  The hat guy from Street Corner Renaissance is hilarious.

Ten - "Chain of Fools"

"Stank face."  Noted.  I like their count-off cheer.  I like that this is set up like a traditional band set up.  Fun staging.  I really don't understand wedge sneakers.  They are not cute like heels and are not comfortable like sneakers.  The beginning feels just a little slow - or a little out of pocket?  The girl singing lead continues to have quite a set of pipes on her though, holy crap.  KEY CHANGE!  I like the breakdown feel but think she could have gone one notch below on the wailing.  (That says more about me than her, admittedly.)  They have such a big sound.  That was good.  See!  Jewel agrees with me on the staging.  And, hey, Ben Folds - there's nothing wrong with a polka!

the acoUstiKats - "Amazed"

Oh man, this is so much better than they're last two because it's so controlled.  These harmonies are gorgeous and the sound is so clean.  I like that they're mixing up the soloists as well.  KEY CHANGE.  That was really, really pretty and incorporated a lot of the feedback that they've gotten from the judges and fixed a lot of the issues I've had with them.  (Snide note: I thought "Maggie, Mike's girlfriend" was one of their moms.  That was an unflattering shot or she's really old?)  Oh, and now I feel really bitchy for having said that because that was adorable.  Though, the two of them look older than college kids, right?  Or am I just a hundred and don't know how old college kids are supposed to look?  Anyway, good on them on both the performance and life event fronts.

Street Corner Renaissance - "Forget You"

I totally get what these guys do - the do-wop-ification of modern music.  I like the lead on this; it sounds like he's telling a story; it's really expressive.  The wailing was hilarious and kind of amazing.  "Don't say that brother."  HAHAHA.  That was so good - tight harmonies, well delivered lead.  I like that Jewel said, "noveau Motown"; that seems like a hilarious thing to say.  I still think Shawn Stockman calling people "Big Baby" is hilarious.

The Filharmonic - "One More Night"

Okay, I LOVE this song.  I think Maroon 5's 'Overexposed' was one of the best pop albums of last year.  Also, my very favorite dance fitness routine ever is to this song, if anyone is interested.  I love that they're putting a lot of thought into being a boy band, which seems hilarious.  And these guys got the Old Navy ad treatment from wardrobe tonight.  I like the arrangement of "stuck on my body like a tattoo"; that was super cool.  KEY CHANGE.  That was SO GOOD.  Well arranged, took the notes from Shawn, mixed up the phrasing to make it an interesting twist, great lead.  I don't agree with Ben's "so good it's boring" critique at all.

Alright, bottom two.  I think this is tough because by and large, I like this group of four much better than the group of four that will be performing in the next show.  I think that the acoUstiKats were supposed to be the easy out of this group but then they switched things up and were pretty great so that put a wrench in things.  I have absolutely no idea; I thought all four of these were really solid performances.  I don't think Ten will be in the bottom; which of the other three is is a crapshoot.  Oh no!  Street Corner Renaissance!  But I adore them!  OH NO!  How am I supposed to choose between the Filharmonic and Street Corner Renaissance?  They're my two favorites!  Oh Sing Off judges, why must you do this to me?!

I like how in the other sing offs the groups have looked bored at each other or made aggressive actions but these two just stand and watch in mutual admiration.  That was such an old school vs. new school showdown and both groups were so great.  I am really irritated because both of these groups are SO GOOD and I would have gladly lost two groups from the other set of four instead of either of these.  Awww, pure class all the way around.  Mutual admiration society!  I think Filharmonic will stay but I'm really not happy about losing Street Corner.  Ugh.  Stupid emotional investment in televised reality singing competitions.

Repeat Songs of the Week

New Year, new music, right? Theo Katzman / Hard Work I've written about how charmed I was by Theo Katzman when I first saw him .  His new album, Heartbreak Hits, is outstanding from beginning to end - a full profile of what a broken heart feels like.  'Hard Work' is a stand-out for its spot on sentiment (I put in the work, why can't I reap the benefits?) and it's rocking chorus. Ben Phipps / I Don't Think So This is pure pop magic with a side of knowing when to call it quits. Adam Levine / No One Else Like You I have no idea how I'd never seen the movie 'Begin Again' but once I did, I listened to the soundtrack non-stop.  Though I didn't 100% believe Keira Knightley as a powerhouse of vocal talent, her acting was lovely and Mark Ruffalo was outstanding.  Adam Levine as as the recently douche-ified star boyfriend, James Corden as the dedicated friend, and Hailee Steinfeld as the sullen daughter round out an outstanding cast. ...

RTE Bonus: 2017 Grammys Significantly Delayed Blog

Standard disclaimer on how this is less fun on the west coast; I am social media unspoiled though so let's see what goes down.  Though, since Justin Bieber has publicly declared that the Grammys aren't relevant anymore, is there any point? Kicking off with a heavy hitter, Adele right out of the gate.  Her hair and make-up look phenomenal and that dress is so much better than what she's worn in the past.  New styling team?  Her pipes remain as impressive as ever though, this song was not one that really did it for me.  Or maybe that spring where I did nothing but listen to '21' and cry on airplanes ruined Adele for me. Is James Corden actually stuck in the stairs or is this a bit.  Oh, it's a bit.  Got it.  Was the point of that, "James Corden is good at physical comedy?"  Because this sequence is not doing a whole lot for me.  I have a lot of of love for James Corden because of a lot of his gimmicks, his appearance in 'Begin Again',...

RTE Bonus: The Grammy Awards Live Blog

8pm Why is Taylor Swift co-opting Brit Brit's Circus tour costumes?  Also, that bunny is creepy.  She sounds better than she usually does live though, so there's that.  And, are those clowns with clown hand puppets?  Yes, Tay-Tay, we know.  You're a big deal. (On a side note, I love her song 'Trouble' so much.  But, narratively, wouldn't it have made sense to release 'Trouble' before 'Never Ever...'?) Oh LL Cool J.  I'm liking the hometown shout outs.  Plus, the signature Kangol hat. The lights hanging in the theater look like the lights that Mumford & Sons used during their summer tour. My favorite thing so far?  Panning to all the unimpressed celeb faces in the crowd. Grammys for Grammy!  Aww, LL, that's adorable. Oh Adele, I love you so much.  You may need a new stylist. ELTON JOHN AND ED SHEERAN!! I read about how Elton John told the Grammy people that they had to have Ed Sheeran perform because Ed is just...
