RTE Bonus: The Sing Off "Live" Blog, Episode 6

It dawned on me after I finished last night's post that they eliminated both teams from the weakest Ultimate Sing Off.

Oh, 'Shake It Out'.  This song makes me cry about 35% of the time.  Man, remember when I saw Florence + the Machine and it was incredible?  Good times.

This is really pretty - I like all the different voices being featured.  The "band" on this is gorgeous; the harmonies are so pretty.  Man, the girl from Ten with the enormous hair has some pipes.  I always enjoy her.  Oh, the girl from Vocal Rush was really good too!  I like that this one isn't a medley; that song is so gorgeous and I loved the arrangement.  Good job, final four groups!

"The boy band with the screaming fans."  "The crowd-pleasing country crooners."  "The dean of a capella university."  I'm pretty sure I could write for this show.  Holy crap, Jewel's boobs look pretty amazing in that dress.

Oooh, Nick gets to be the mentor this week!  HA!  The girl from Vocal Rush's reaction to Nick was hilarious.  Also, Nick Lachey's arms look pretty fricking ridiculous in that shirt.  "Four white boys from Ohio walked into the president of MoTown's office and sang a Boyz II Men medley, a capella."  Oh, 98 Degrees.  How sad you got overshadowed by the great boyband battle of the 90s.

Shawn Stockman is really committed to the suspenders/bow tie look, huh?

The Filharmonic - "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'"

I hope this is a good song for this group.  OMG.  How pumped are these guys that Nick Lachey is singing with them?  Oh, Nick Lachey.  You're such a dreamboat.  Ooh, they're doing the throwback suits and choreography!  The first line of that lead was like liquid gold.  This rushed just a tad when the perc kicked in?  I like the diagonal lines on the stairs bit.  I also like that they're throwing a bit of 90s flavor into it after a classically faithful opening.  That was solid in terms of the performance but it was lacking one big moment?  See, Shawn agrees with me on the choreography!  Dudes, Shawn wants a beginning, middle & end.  he keeps saying that.  This one was missing an end.  The beginning & middle were really good though.  "I did miss a climax and that gets a little frustraing when you're not able to reach that."  The look on Ben Folds face.  Holy crap.  Wait, did Nick Lachey really just yell about "Jewel's climax" on TV?  That's amazing.

Ten - "Proud Mary"

"Oh, yeah, Drew! Hey Drew!"  HAHAHA.  That makes me want to watch some of Drew Lachey's "Save a Horse, Ride A Cowboy" Dancing With the Stars performance.  Oh Drew Lachey.  (You're welcome for that link, by the way.)  I bet this is going to be good.  "We like it nice and rough."  What the fuck is going on tonight?  That was some great hair flipping!  I really like the girl on left's dress - with the black over the white.  It sounds like they totally effed the beat there for a bit, right?  I feel like that was vocally strong but lost the pocket about a third of the way through and didn't get it back until the tail end.  Huh, maybe I was wrong about the timing issues because none of the judges mentioned them.  It sounded so off though!

Home Free - "Colder Weather"

Ha!  Even these guys have crushes on Nick Lachey.  Ooh!  Beard-o gets to have a solo!  Ooooh...chills in this unison "stuck in colder weather".  Holy shit, that was beautiful.  I maybe just teared up.  That was so, so good.  Yowza.  If they were going for emotion, they nailed it.  That rendered me vaguely inarticulate.

Vocal Rush - "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark"

"Nick Lachey wall presses."  Ha!  Whoa, wall of sound opening.  Ooh, I like this lead girl.  She's got some attitude, huh?  I think Shawn Stockman is making "stank face".  Whoa, there are flames.  The "light 'em up" section is rushing, yes?  (Man, I am all over people keeping time tonight which is hilarious because I am pretty awful at it.)  I super like the rap guy!  That was awesome.  I'm sorry are you jumping while you sing?  That's pretty impressive.  I like Shawn's assessment of how strongly they attack everything.  I do like their youthful exuberance.

Sadly, I think it's going to be The Filharmonic vs. Ten in the Ultimate Sing Off.  I think the judges wanted "more" from both groups.  Even in fast forward, this damn dinosaur movie promo makes me panic-y.

No, seriously have to figure out a way to monetize my uncanny ability to predict the bottom two of this show.

"Should I Stay Or Should I Go" seems like an odd choice.  Holy crap, Joe from Filharmonic is on this.  I don't love the gospel breakdown from Ten.  What on earth is the perc guy from Ten doing?  He looked like he was having a speaking in tongues seizure?  The swing breakdown from Filharmonic was interesting/unexpected.  I continue to be so impressed by the girl from Ten with the enormous hair.  I mean, obviously I'm biased but I would keep Filharmonic; I think that they're super fun and generally very good.  But, I think the judges prefer Ten and so they'll be safe.  Okay, seriously.  It's a gift.  I'm pretty bummed for Filharmonic; I hope they parlay this into something.

Repeat Songs of the Week

New Year, new music, right? Theo Katzman / Hard Work I've written about how charmed I was by Theo Katzman when I first saw him .  His new album, Heartbreak Hits, is outstanding from beginning to end - a full profile of what a broken heart feels like.  'Hard Work' is a stand-out for its spot on sentiment (I put in the work, why can't I reap the benefits?) and it's rocking chorus. Ben Phipps / I Don't Think So This is pure pop magic with a side of knowing when to call it quits. Adam Levine / No One Else Like You I have no idea how I'd never seen the movie 'Begin Again' but once I did, I listened to the soundtrack non-stop.  Though I didn't 100% believe Keira Knightley as a powerhouse of vocal talent, her acting was lovely and Mark Ruffalo was outstanding.  Adam Levine as as the recently douche-ified star boyfriend, James Corden as the dedicated friend, and Hailee Steinfeld as the sullen daughter round out an outstanding cast. ...

RTE Bonus: 2017 Grammys Significantly Delayed Blog

Standard disclaimer on how this is less fun on the west coast; I am social media unspoiled though so let's see what goes down.  Though, since Justin Bieber has publicly declared that the Grammys aren't relevant anymore, is there any point? Kicking off with a heavy hitter, Adele right out of the gate.  Her hair and make-up look phenomenal and that dress is so much better than what she's worn in the past.  New styling team?  Her pipes remain as impressive as ever though, this song was not one that really did it for me.  Or maybe that spring where I did nothing but listen to '21' and cry on airplanes ruined Adele for me. Is James Corden actually stuck in the stairs or is this a bit.  Oh, it's a bit.  Got it.  Was the point of that, "James Corden is good at physical comedy?"  Because this sequence is not doing a whole lot for me.  I have a lot of of love for James Corden because of a lot of his gimmicks, his appearance in 'Begin Again',...

RTE Bonus: The Grammy Awards Live Blog

8pm Why is Taylor Swift co-opting Brit Brit's Circus tour costumes?  Also, that bunny is creepy.  She sounds better than she usually does live though, so there's that.  And, are those clowns with clown hand puppets?  Yes, Tay-Tay, we know.  You're a big deal. (On a side note, I love her song 'Trouble' so much.  But, narratively, wouldn't it have made sense to release 'Trouble' before 'Never Ever...'?) Oh LL Cool J.  I'm liking the hometown shout outs.  Plus, the signature Kangol hat. The lights hanging in the theater look like the lights that Mumford & Sons used during their summer tour. My favorite thing so far?  Panning to all the unimpressed celeb faces in the crowd. Grammys for Grammy!  Aww, LL, that's adorable. Oh Adele, I love you so much.  You may need a new stylist. ELTON JOHN AND ED SHEERAN!! I read about how Elton John told the Grammy people that they had to have Ed Sheeran perform because Ed is just...
