The Sing Off "Live" Blog, Episode 7

That is a really shiny gold jacket, sir.  I feel like this song gets sung on singing competitions a lot.  I adore this soloist from Vocal Rush; she seems so much older than a high school student.  Oooh, the perc-ist from Ten!  He continues to be able to get it.  Yay, huge hair girl!  I don't know who that guy dancing in the crowd was but that was kind of amazing.  It also dawns on me that if this is the finale, there's no voting.  Did they really just record all this over the summer and keep it until now?  Crazy.  YAY!  Street Corner Renaissance!

Nick Lachey just explained what a capella was; take a shot.

Aww, that's right; The Filharmonic were eliminated.  Bummer.

Most fun search term that's brought someone to RTE this week?  "Where does Shawn Stockman buy his suspenders"

I feel like Nick is kind of phoning in these judge's descriptions tonight.  "Piano playing a capella aficionado?"  I could have done better.  ZOMG Nick Lachey is singing "It Had To Be You".  What a dreamboat.  I wonder if he's really pumped to be singing.  Haha at Shawn Stockman's chair-dancing.  "The hardest working dimples in show business"  HA! Who on earth would have thought that these two would have sounded so good singing together?  That was quite enjoyable!

Why is Nick doing the Charleston on stage to "Jingle Bell Rock"?  And, hey acoUstiKats!  Snappy velvet jackets, dudes!

Ten featuring Shawn Stockman - "Joyful, Joyful"

I love that she specified that they were doing the Sister Act version of this song.  Crushes on Shawn Stockman are encouraged; do your thing Didi (probably spelled wrong).  Those are some fancy velvet French cuffs, Shawn Stockman.  His singing voice is higher than his speaking voice?  This is beautiful.  OOh, and now they're going to "take us to church".  Is that a scarf shaped like a vest?  I hope this is not the only time they sing this show because I'd love to hear some of them sing lead as well.  Whoa!  And now there's dancing!  That was a pretty intense body roll, dude.  I like that they are still dancing into the commercial break.  I got so distracted by how good Shawn Stockman was that I forgot to notice the group singing.

I would listen to a Doo-Wop Christmas album from Street Corner Renaissance.

I would listen to an album of almost anything from The Filharmonic.

Sometimes I'm still chagrined that I panned Pentatonix's first Sing Off appearance.  I adore that they have been so very successful since their run on the show, particularly because they were so smart about capitalizing on their exposure and did some of the smartest online marketing ever.

I have nothing to say about that other than the fact that it was amazing.  I'm so excited there's an a capella group like that out there doing what they do.

I would not listen to Calle Sol do much of anything.  (Sorry to any Calle Sol fans I just offended.)

Home Free - "I Want Crazy"

I really like these guys.  I'm not sure a clip package this extensive is needed; it's only been two weeks?  I adore this song and think Hunter Hayes is adorable.  I would imagine this is going to be a bit more of a grown-up take?  This is the first time I've ever heard individual parts of their backing; I'm not sure if that's a good thing.  Oh, that unison was gorgeous in the first chorus.  And, of course, the bass guy so that the judges can go nuts.  This guy is such a good storyteller in his lead performances.  I like this switch up after the bass part to the rhythm that strayed from the original.  "I know now" was some great phrasing and the call & echo phrasing of the last bit was really well arranged.  They're really good.  This one sounded not quite as tight as they usually are at the front?  But, really excellent.  Awww.  "You felt like stars tonight."  That's high praise, friends.

DREW LACHEY!!!!  Nick Lachey looks so serious.  This is so pretty and is making me rethink not going back to NY for Christmas.  Damn you, 98 Degrees, for making me cry.

"Did 98 Degrees heat it up for you?"  HA!

Why did Princeton open up "Deck the Halls" with the intro to Footloose?

(The least expensive SFO>BUF roundtrip flight for something in the next couple days is $506.  Too much to justify an impulse airline ticket purchase.)

How awkward was it to film this in the middle of summer?  I actually cackled when Jewel opened the Nick picture.  That was hilarious.

Vocal Rush Featuring Ben Folds - "Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth"

That's a lot of dry ice on the stage.  Aww, I don't think this guy got to sing much and now he's dueting with Ben Folds!  How awesome for him!  I like that this is a duet so lots of the kids get to sing with Ben.  Also, who knew that Ben Folds could do a convincing Bowie?  This is so pretty.  I like that Ben Folds sounded amazing but also let the kids take turns shining.  That was really good.

Oh look, it's Element.  Oh look, there's my fast forward button.

Oh, high tenor from Voice Play, they should have let you sing more.

Ten - "Love On Top"

Whoa, that is some booty shaking to get things started.  Remember when Beyonce announced her pregnancy with this song?  That "You put my love on" quick key change succession was bad. ass.  I think that this one with the huge blonde hair is an absolute superstar.  Someone get that girl a recording contract.  That was more fun than I expected from them - they usually take themselves kind of seriously but that was not that at all.  Well arranged, great blend, gorgeous lead.  "I want to spank you tonight."  Jewel, wtf?  "An official stank face performance."  "A box of assorted chocolates."  Is that offensive?  Ha!  Nick, also wondering if that was offensive.

Home Free Featuring Jewel - "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"i

I love that these guys all have crushes on Jewel.  It's adorable.  (Again, Jewel is so much more delightful in this capacity than I would have anticipated.  Four for you Jewel, four for you.)  Shawn Stockman yowling "Wow!" was amazing.  I also really like Jewel's dress for this segment, though with the hair and the arm movements she looks just a smidge like she's trying to do a Kristin Chenoweth impression in body language.  This is really pretty but I wish the guys had a little more chance to shine.  Really, really pretty.

Pat Bentar, etc. - "We Belong"

This is good?  She's a legend?  Why is she on this show and why does that guy have a guitar thus negating the first and only rule of the Sing Off?  Yay?

Vocal Rush - "Roar"

I liked this song the first ten times I heard it...when it was called "Brave" and performed by Sara Bareilles.  This is rushing?  Or they clicked it off at just a little too fast?  I feel like some of the lead phrases are clipped.  The girl in the black dress can blow, huh?  That was a very faithful arrangement and a high energy performance - definitely took advantage of their youthful exuberance.  They seem like really good kids, you know?

Alright, the winner?  I think it's between Home Free and Ten - and either would be a good winner. I don't like the idea of a group that formed just for the show winning.  But, Home Free is already a professional group.  Hmmm....  I'm calling Ten as the winner.  Though my personal preference is probably for Home Free but that has more to do with genre than with talent because both groups are hella talented.

Aww, I liked Shawn's speech to the groups.

Stay classy, Vocal Rush!  Maybe I should try to go to Oakland to see them.

Yay, mutual admiration society between the finalists.  I love that and love that all a capella is a big family.

Home Free!  That's a surprise; I did not expect that!  How exciting for them!  I feel like they could be legitimate country artists, like on the radio, with the right material.  Awww, yay!  (Also, I like that I called every elimination correctly but not the winner.  Oops.)

I'm so sad that the Sing Off is over.  I hate it when the Sing Off is over.  Oh look, I just bought tickets to the Sing Off tour.  I wonder how that happened..

8pm Why is Taylor Swift co-opting Brit Brit's Circus tour costumes?  Also, that bunny is creepy.  She sounds better than she usually does live though, so there's that.  And, are those clowns with clown hand puppets?  Yes, Tay-Tay, we know.  You're a big deal. (On a side note, I love her song 'Trouble' so much.  But, narratively, wouldn't it have made sense to release 'Trouble' before 'Never Ever...'?) Oh LL Cool J.  I'm liking the hometown shout outs.  Plus, the signature Kangol hat. The lights hanging in the theater look like the lights that Mumford & Sons used during their summer tour. My favorite thing so far?  Panning to all the unimpressed celeb faces in the crowd. Grammys for Grammy!  Aww, LL, that's adorable. Oh Adele, I love you so much.  You may need a new stylist. ELTON JOHN AND ED SHEERAN!! I read about how Elton John told the Grammy people that they had to have Ed Sheeran perform because Ed is just so am

Usual disclaimers about how this is much less fun from the west coast and on DVR. I know I say this every time but I love Bruno Mars.  I like that he's traveling with a band of hpye men, though I miss his horn section.  Whoa - how did I miss that Bruno is the heir apparent to MJ?  This dance break is outstanding.  Is the use of pop and locking in reference to "pop, pop it's showtime?" Gigi Hadid is a model, right?  Has she ever had a speaking job before?  I'm not sure this would be the place to start?  I like that she's called out both the electoral college and Melania in the first four minutes.  Though that impression was kind of weak sauce.  Much like the VMAs, I feel like I still know things about music but if the presenters are what the children are into, I am out of touch.  Jay Pharaoh's Donald impression is hilarious though. These three look like they could orchestrate a complicated murder and get away with it, stage a hostile corporate takeov

The Space Between the Tears We Cry is the Laughter Keeps Us Coming Back For More

Who: Dave Matthews Band with Brandi Carlile When: July 3, 2012 Where: Darien Lake Performing Arts Center/ Darien Center, NY With: Zach, James & Chelsea Of Note: Influencing the next generation ... There are so many things I want to say, that I need to say about this show. Brace yourself. Seeing the Dave Matthews Band at Darien Lake is a summer tradition for me and I love all of it. The smell of sunscreen, the great lot for tailgating, the terrible traffic getting out of the venue, the (usually) day of roller coasters that precedes it...I love it all. Sadly, my comrades in Dave at Darien have either moved away or have new responsibilities/different priorities now so I was afraid it might not happen this year. No big deal, I'm seeing two other DMB shows this summer, right? Then, a stroke of genius hit me and I asked my nephew if he'd like me to take him to his very first concert. He agreed, asked if he could bring some friends (which, obviously!) and we w
