RTE Bonus: The Sing Off "Live Blog, Episode 5

Why is this starting in black & white?  Oooh, the bass guy and the girl from VoicePlay do not sound great together.  The girl from Ten and guy from acoUstiKats do sound good together.  That is some pretty intense choreography...with the kicking.  Awww, that was nice.  I like that Jewel & Shawn Stockman sang to each other throughout it.

Ah, it's movie night.  That's why it was in black & white.

Oh no!  Two teams going home?!  Why must The Sing Off go so quickly?  (Well, I know why.  It's because when they did the extended season ratings plummeted.)  Dude.  Shawn Stockman is jacked, apparent even under his plaid shirt.

I have to say, I was sad to see Sara B. leave but Jewel has been a pleasant surprise in her capacity as judge/mentor.  Good for her.

Home Free - "Pretty Woman"

The Good, The Bad, The Beard.  Ha!!  I think Mr. Smarm Face has a little crush on Jewel.  I approve of that.  That was a cool perc intro.  Haha, I like the way he delivered "Mercy".  Oooh, snap!  They're turning this into a country ballad.  This is badass.  And back to the swing - that was super good.  The lead's high note sounded just a little strained in one or two places but great arrangement, really tight performance.  "The boy can blow.  He ain't your typical singing white boy."  Man, Shawn Stockman is on fire tonight.  Jewel's hair also looks very pretty.  HA!  Bass guy was actually dropping it like it's hot.

So I was fast forwarding through the commercials and stopped because, "Wait, is that Skylar Astin?  What's he doing?"  Nope, it was Jimmy Fallon.  Bahaha.

Vocal Rush - "Against All Odds"

Beth sent me a text that said last week's battles was like "That battle was like the urban vs. suburban cheerleaders from Bring It On."  I think Beth is hilarious.  This is an interesting song choice because it's so far outside what we've seen them do before.  It will either be really good or disappointing.  This girl singing lead is singing with the maturity of someone older, right?  I feel like she just told a story.  the second lead also has a really pretty voice.  That was really pretty.  Good harmonies, well performed, lots of emotion.  Those sparkly blue dresses are not particularly flattering, which is unfortunate because all these girls are so pretty.

acoUstiKats - "Old Time Rock & Roll"

Why are they doing a Hangover spoof?  This song seems like it's in their wheelhouse, but let's hope they don't get too manic.  Oh, hey, Jewel just said that too!  Ah, the collegiate start out in classical style trick.  That sounded good.  I like the singing lead - that was quite a high note.  The second guy singing lead can get it, fyi.  And now we're getting taken to church.  And now there's people in tear-away pants.  I'm glad they weren't wearing actual tighty-whiteys.  I like that Nick Lachey was kind of skeptical of the pants removal.  this was pretty much exactly what I expected from them - though I'm glad they reigned themselves in enough to keep the music mostly on point.  Also, I'm pretty sure Shawn Stockman just gave them a good-bye.  Good point on the rock & roll, Ben.  I continue to be confused as to why they're so committed to the classical guy as a lead vocalist when he sounds out of place doing pop/rock.

Filharmonic - "Dont Want To Miss A Thing"

Hahaha.  I like that he wants to save the world from an asteroid with their voices.  Oh...I get it now.  Each group has a little movie spoof in their clip package.  Ha!  I didn't get that.  Oh wow, that cold open had to be difficult.  I don't love the weird muted camo outfits.  The second lead guy has such a great voice, but I don't know if I believe him telling this story.  Something sounded off in the harmony at the beginning of the bridge?  Or was it the soloist that was off?  Oh, and there, when he got "big", I believed him a lot more.  That was good, but I wanted it to be just a little better?    Awww, he's crying.  Oh, sweetie.  I like Ben's diatribe against cymbals because he obviously knows his shit.  Dude!  I said that!  About the bridge!

Sometimes I wonder if the final nail in the coffin of my youth is that I really enjoy Chicago Fire, a procedural about a fire house and am looking forward to its partner show Chicago, PD.  I feel like police procedurals are an old person thing.

VoicePlay  - "Don't You Forget About Me"

This is such a great song (and shout out to one of the best moments in 'Pitch Perfect').  I hope they do it justice.  Also, Jewel, with some aca-therapy.  Ha!  They're dressed like the movie!  I like this opening a lot - very well arranged.  Does their high tenor have a tongue ring?  I would think that would be difficult.  I like the bald guy's voice so much.  Oooh, I just got chills during the wall of sound when everyone was taking off their props.  Something sounds off in this angry ending though...like it was too forced or something?  The very end was a let down after a strong opening and an awesome middle.  Dude, I am so on board with what Shawn just said about the arrangement.  I love that Ben just said he was getting beat up by someone who looked like Nick.  Especially since a lot of Ben's music is about being a high school outcast.  Ooh, apparently the part I really liked was a polyphony.  Thanks Jewel!

Ten - "Skyfall"

Full disclosure, I didn't really love this song when it was all over the radio whenever that was.  I know it was a big deal... just not my favorite.  The texture of the background on this is really great.  The lead sounds like it is lacking one notch of depth or something.  Like, her voice is great, obviously...it just needs something more.  Oh, holy shit.  This second lead is incredible - she just riffed through a KEY CHANGE.  She was amazing, at least partially because she wasn't trying to sound anything like Adele; she sounded exactly like herself.  I like that Ben just said, "I get this is a capella but you should be with a band."

Oh, wow, three Ultimate Sing Offs!

acoUstiKats vs. Voice Play - "Eye of the Tiger"

Aww, Nick was so pumped about saying "Begin!"  Oh dear, aerobics choreography.  Though, they're right - it's quite the wall of sound.  I like that they're letting a guy sing for Voice Play.  I'm not sure I loved the samba break in this.  This ending is getting a little weird, right?  That was...interesting.  I think that the acoUstiKats were better suited to this song.  Like, I think Voice Play is the group the judges like better but the acoUstiKats were better in that performance.  I agree with Ben though, it's awesome that they worked really closely together.

Ten vs. Vocal Rush - "Fame"

I like that Vocal Rush just started stepping at Ten.  I like that both groups are like "Eff this, both of us are staying."  That was some awesome smack talk.  "They're young."  "I've got ten fingers to wave good-bye."  Let's talk about Ten's beat boxer.  Yowza.  The Vocal Rush leads are great; they sound so much older than they are (in a good way!).  Oh, there's a double time break in here.  Fun.  Also, that's some intense step-touching.  Shawn Stockman likes that they just kind of took it to church.  That was better than the first battle.  This was like one big super group, which makes it hard to call a winner.  I like all the leads that got passed along.  Ha, I like that Jewel also noted that the beat boxer from Ten can get it.  Awww, Shawn Stockman, I liked her too!

Home Free v. Filharmonic - "I'm Alright"

Ohmygoodness, he just learned body rolls by "being a mermaid".  That was hilarious.  Filharmonic brought some intenstity to their first contribution.  That is some hilarious mock country dancing.  Oh this is really clever - the swapped lead singers & swapped dance styles.  WHOA - A DRUM OFF!!!!  And now a Soul Train line!  Okay, that was incredible.  Both groups were so good and the groups performed so well together.  Nick is having a lot of fun with Caddyshack puns.  That was definitely the best battle.  Did Jewel really just say, "Oh my heck?"  That's kind of adorable.

Alright, if I had to pick winners, I would say: acoUstiKats (typing that is hella annoying, fyi), Ten and Home Free.  But, the fact that everyone worked together so much makes it hard.

Oh, there's not winners of each battle; I misunderstood.  So, Voice Play and acoUstiKats go home, right?  Okay, good.  Good episode!

8pm Why is Taylor Swift co-opting Brit Brit's Circus tour costumes?  Also, that bunny is creepy.  She sounds better than she usually does live though, so there's that.  And, are those clowns with clown hand puppets?  Yes, Tay-Tay, we know.  You're a big deal. (On a side note, I love her song 'Trouble' so much.  But, narratively, wouldn't it have made sense to release 'Trouble' before 'Never Ever...'?) Oh LL Cool J.  I'm liking the hometown shout outs.  Plus, the signature Kangol hat. The lights hanging in the theater look like the lights that Mumford & Sons used during their summer tour. My favorite thing so far?  Panning to all the unimpressed celeb faces in the crowd. Grammys for Grammy!  Aww, LL, that's adorable. Oh Adele, I love you so much.  You may need a new stylist. ELTON JOHN AND ED SHEERAN!! I read about how Elton John told the Grammy people that they had to have Ed Sheeran perform because Ed is just so am

Usual disclaimers about how this is much less fun from the west coast and on DVR. I know I say this every time but I love Bruno Mars.  I like that he's traveling with a band of hpye men, though I miss his horn section.  Whoa - how did I miss that Bruno is the heir apparent to MJ?  This dance break is outstanding.  Is the use of pop and locking in reference to "pop, pop it's showtime?" Gigi Hadid is a model, right?  Has she ever had a speaking job before?  I'm not sure this would be the place to start?  I like that she's called out both the electoral college and Melania in the first four minutes.  Though that impression was kind of weak sauce.  Much like the VMAs, I feel like I still know things about music but if the presenters are what the children are into, I am out of touch.  Jay Pharaoh's Donald impression is hilarious though. These three look like they could orchestrate a complicated murder and get away with it, stage a hostile corporate takeov

The Space Between the Tears We Cry is the Laughter Keeps Us Coming Back For More

Who: Dave Matthews Band with Brandi Carlile When: July 3, 2012 Where: Darien Lake Performing Arts Center/ Darien Center, NY With: Zach, James & Chelsea Of Note: Influencing the next generation ... There are so many things I want to say, that I need to say about this show. Brace yourself. Seeing the Dave Matthews Band at Darien Lake is a summer tradition for me and I love all of it. The smell of sunscreen, the great lot for tailgating, the terrible traffic getting out of the venue, the (usually) day of roller coasters that precedes it...I love it all. Sadly, my comrades in Dave at Darien have either moved away or have new responsibilities/different priorities now so I was afraid it might not happen this year. No big deal, I'm seeing two other DMB shows this summer, right? Then, a stroke of genius hit me and I asked my nephew if he'd like me to take him to his very first concert. He agreed, asked if he could bring some friends (which, obviously!) and we w
